Kennington Post Office Possible Closure

For many of our younger readers, a place where you put things in the post, get out cash and obtain foreign currency is about as relevant as, well, Jeremy Clarkson or ‘Chico Time’. But for those not fortunate enough to whiz about on scooters to return their Asos delivery at Tesco, the Post Office is an  important place, and the Kennington Post office is on a list to be closed and they need our help!

Kennington Post Office was earmarked for closure 10/11 years ago and was saved following local engagement and subsequently given a glow up and has ended in its current form. At the time our local MP, Councillors, two petitions (2000 signatures) and local responses to the formal consultation  influenced the outcome.  To find out more about the campaign follow the large, clown like QR code below. If you find QR codes a bit scary and prefer the comfort of a post office/website, you can join here

RVT Sports Day at Spring Gardens

Looking for a fun distraction on what is probably the last weekend of the summer? Of course you are and so are we, and we can recommend nothing better than the charity raising and inclusive Royal Vauxhall Tavern Sports Day at the back of Spring Gardens on Monday 26 August from 1pm.

For the uninitiated, Sports Day is our own little Notting Hill carnival, with soca and steel drums substituted with handbag throwing, tug of war and drag queens.  The event is composed  of approximately 10 teams, usually dressed up and with great names. As you can imagine, there is a definite comedy element to the proceedings and is MC’ed some real BBC sports reporters who corral events into a semblance of actual competition. The various tasks (egg and spoon, the 50 metre mince, drag race relay, etc) are constructed in a knockout format with the winning team being crowned at about 5pm

This event is free but bring some cash as there will be charity buckets and volunteers about, and there is also a raffle.  The day is certainly not limited to a specific demographic and there are a number of families there with kids, older folks, and an overall sense of mirth abounds. There are bars, music and once in a while the cute critters from Vauxhall City Farm even pop over for a visit. Our suggestion is to grab a blanket and some food and make a picnic out of it. The website indicates a kickoff at 1, but is usually about 1:30. And If you are going please pop over and say hello to the Runoff team. And good luck trying to find out what we look like, as we might just be a room of AI chatbots.

The highlight of the day has to be the rhythmic gymnastics because, let’s be frank, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve witnessed a dozen hairy men in tutus dancing to ‘Toxic’

Best Pub Quizzes in Greater Kennington

After a long day at Runoff Towers, a gaggle of us hopped over to gastro pub The Rose in Albert Embankment to bask in their pub quiz, among other temptations. The quiz is held upstairs and MC’ed by a slightly bumbling but endearing American chap who ironically lays on some very, very tricky questions involving songs, maps, letter games and general trivia (mind bending picture round clues below). There are free drink questions and prizes to be won and on our night the jackpot was at £200. The crowd was very convivial but contained, and there wasn’t a cheating mobile in sight.

On the food front, it pains us to say that the mains had, well, spent most of their short lives in a freezer. However, some of the starters were very tasty and we can recommend the calamari. And, as if arisen from the ashes, there  was a pop up menu selection from the short lived Kennington Cross burger joint Rare Burger Co. which looked more enticing. The Rose pub quiz is on Monday nights from 19:00 and can be reserved on their website. Time well spent after a day at work.

If you like a bit of stand up injected into your pub quiz, we highly recommend the quiz at The Old Red Lion pub in Kennington Park Road. Hosted by the deadpan and pseudo legendary ‘Paul Partridge Experience’, there is often a theme (music is common) and games such as throwing rings around bottles or dancing. Listen closely and he will manage to insult most celebrities, and even if ask himself existential questions such as ‘how did my life end up like this’. The Old Red Lion pub quiz is on Sunday nights from 20:00 and can be reserved on their website

Paul Partridge, Quiz supremo.

And if you’re wondering if team Runoff won the pub quiz then let me be the first to tell you that we didn’t. That honour was bestowed on the young men with great hair who scored our quiz sheet, who then eagerly informed us that they live in north London and are great friends from Uni. We resisted the urge to say ‘oh yeah, well we all work at an imaginary publishing house so TAKE THAT’ and throw our crumpled quiz sheet at them.

Kennington Park Dog Show

UPDATE FRIDAY, 9 SEPT. CANCELLED! SORRY DOG LOVERS! As you can probably ascertain from the small black bags strewn here and there, Greater Kennington is awash with dogs and now our canine compatriots are even getting their OWN SHOW on Sunday, 11 September!

The Kennington Park Dog Show has been made possible by our good friends over at Friends of Kennington Park and not so good friends at Berkeley Homes. It’s also being sponsored by ‘Hound Hut’ in Clapham Road. For years we’ve walked by the place with its window displays of leads, cages, and chains and always just assumed it was an S&M/bondage establishment. Well as it turns out its actually a very smart dog shop.

And for all you singletons out there, if you’re looking for love we all know that parading around with a cute pooch increases your pulling power by 60%. So pop over to Hound Hut, buy that S&M lead, and borrow the nearest poodle as this looks like great fun. Details below.

Summer Fun in Greater Kennington and Beyond

Its summertime and we’re on board to tell you about two free (and we love free) festivals and the first is this Sunday (the 10th) in Kennington Park. We attended the Kennington Park Festival a few years ago and departed quickly after feeling like we’d just crashed a poorly attended family reunion. However, thanks to the guilty conscience of Berkeley Homes it is now properly funded and looks to be back with a vengeance. This is a family friendly event so one can expect face painting, non scary clowns, organised games, music, dancing and of course some pretty yummy looking food stalls.

If you’re a regular reader you’ll be aware that we greatly caution against leaving Greater Kennington. However, if you do so just once in your life you could do a lot worse than attend the fantastic Lambeth Country Fair. This massive soiree accommodates over 100,000 people and includes a mind boggling selection of food stalls, bars, loads of music and stages, real life farm animals, and a fun fair. And the best bit is that the activities reflect the diversity and eclectisim of Lambeth. Our favourite bit is the competition where people carve their garden veg into famous people or pieces of anatomy. This bit of the Fair is so heralded that its been written about in Time Out

Lambeth Country Fair is next weekend (16 and 17 July) in Brockwell Park. Our top tip for this fandango is that if you happen to own a car don’t use it as you’ll still be looking for a parking spot come Christmas. Plus, you won’t be able to enjoy all the great craft beer on offer.

Four Quarters

We confess to a degree of shame at our embrace of the soulless juggernaut that has become Elephant Park. That shame is mitigated, however, by the fact that it is now the home of some of the independent shops that were turfed out of the shopping centre (sadly the electric massage chairs didn’t make it over). And also home to some very cool micro chains, and one of them is a 80/90’s video game themed bar called ‘Four Quarters’.

Four Quarters bills itself as a ‘no fills bar’ but they really don’t do themselves justice as they have a good selection of lagers, IPAs, wines and spirits. We booked a table (a Space Invaders table video game, no less) but this is not mandatory. How it works is that you buy real US quarters at the bar and each games costs 25 cents (about 20p).

For those of you who get thrilled by your 80’s games, on offer they have Pac Man (Mr and Ms), Donkey Kong, Galaxian, Asteroids, Frogger and a nice range of pinball machines, among others. For those of you who prefer your 90’s games they have early Guitar Hero, Alien v. Predator, The Simpsons, NBA Jam, and Pole Position II. For those of you into gaming after that period then you probably have no idea what we’re talking about, but we’re impressed that you’ve read this far.

If you register on the Four Quarters website you can compete for a high score with other users which is a fun way to lure you back. They also have console booths with games such as Nintendo and X Box. They do serve food, but we didn’t see anyone eating there in the midst of the fun. If you’re peckish we recommend 400 Rabbits, which we reviewed a few weeks ago and is next door.

Loving Kennington Park Competition

Well isn’t this as lovely thing? Our friends over at Kennington Park are running a competition throughout April to ascertain what we Greater Kenningtonians have loved the most about Kennington Park (a lot) during lockdown. Details can be found here.

A word to the wise, folks. We are not exactly the ‘target audience’ for this competition. It is very important to keep your entries clean, so no videos of you tripping over a pram after downing 7 canned Mojitos or a poem about the time you got lucky behind the cafe.

RVT/GMFA Sports Day

Who needs to slog all the way to Notting Hill when we have our own carnival right here in greater Kennington?  Just substitute Calypso with a handbag toss and move Soca aside for a drag relay and you have one of the most enjoyable days at KR towers. It’s all happening on Monday,  and please let us explain.

Every year in Spring Gardens the Royal Vauxhall Tavern hosts a sports day for Gay Men Fighting Aids. GMFA is a charity that uses the Sports Day as a key part of its fundraising season. The event is free and volunteers are all about the place with buckets for contributions. It usually draws a sizeable and has been around for aeons.

The sports day is composed  of 10 or so teams, usually dressed up and with great names. As you can imagine, there is a definite comedy element to the proceedings and it is MC’ed by the hilarious Timberlina (plus some real BBC sports reporters as some people take the events very seriously). The various tasks (egg and spoon, the 50 metre mince, tug of war, etc) are constructed in a knockout format with the winning team being crowned at about 5.

The day is certainly not limited to a specific demographic and there are a number of families there with kids, older folks, and an overall sense of mirth abounds. It’s competition time! Win a super limited edition vinyl album by The Maccabees

The Maccabees’ no. 1 album Marks To Prove It is a tribute to North Kennington (or, as The Maccabees rather quaintly still call it, Elephant & Castle). The album was recorded at the band’s own Elephant Studios, the videos are set in North Kennington, and the cover features a photo of the Michael Faraday Memorial.

We’ve managed to lay our hands on an extremely limited edition vinyl copy of the album. Not only is the vinyl blue like the Elephant & Castle shopping centre but, in a tribute to the wind turbines at the top of the Strata building, the sticker has been placed so as to make the A side completely unplayable!
