It was just one of many films to be shot on the Heygate Estate, which is due for demolition at some point in the next decade or so, but in the meantime manages to be magnificent, ugly and beautiful all at the same time (the beautiful part is the urban forest).

Kennington street art
on the old Kennington Stores, at the junction of Renfrew Road and Kennington Lane. Next door you can see Soma Books, a unique independent bookstore with a map of disappearing Palestine in the window and Indian art within.
Doost – a Persian Grill & Vodka Bar
Doost is a Persian Grill & Vodka Bar that opened in the site Amici outgrew on Kennington Road. A Persian Grill & Vodka Bar might seem like a strange combination, but apparently vodka bars were widespread in Iran before the Islamic Revolution, and the food is really nice if not cheap. Their website appears to have been inspired by Hooters but despite that, it’s neither tacky nor unrefined.
Ninja Tune Records
Ninja Tune Records, one of the UK’s leading independent record labels, is based on Kennington Lane.
Kennington blogs
Many of our fellow Kennington blogs have responded enthusiastically to the arrival of this blog so it’s time to give them a name check:
Mobile Gardeners, a dynamic new meanwhile community park space in North Kennington
Roundabout News, all about the north roundabout in North Kennington
historic Kennington celebrities
Charlie Chaplin lived at numerous addresses in Kennington. If you buy a property in Kennington, the likelihood is that Charlie Chaplin will have lived there at some point. Having fallen on hard times, Charlie and his mum spent some time in the Victorian workhouse that is now home to the amazing Cinema Museum.
Van Gogh lived on what is now called Kennington Road. The madness set in only after he left.
The founder of Singapore was from East Kennington. In many ways Singapore can be seen as an attempt to re-create Kennington in Asia.
Bob Marley stayed in South Kennington when St Agnes Place was home to a Rastafari temple, and played football in Kennington Park. Beat that, Hyde Park.
Sally White
Very exciting to see a high end coffee shop and deli opening up in the heart of Kennington. Welcome Sally White which is on Kennington Road at the junction with Windmill Row. They serve proper coffee, nice cakes, and they commission poetry about asparagus (bet Ottolenghi have never done that).
Kevin Spacey
Kevin Spacey lives in North West Kennington and has been spotted in Costcutter on Westminster Bridge Road shopping for pancake ingredients late at night. Geraldine Mary Harmsworth park was the site of his infamous late night dog walking/phone theft incident.
Florence Welch recently moved to Kennington
That’s Florence from Florence & The Machine, who previously lived with her parents in neighbouring Camberwell.
Vogue has more information, and here’s a picture of Florence in her new home:
The Black Dog
The Black Dog is the coolest pub between Brixton and Hoxton, and serves good food and a nice selection of beers including Brooklyn Lager. Weirdly it is closed on Saturdays but that does mean it can be hired for private parties on that day.
